Facebook, minus the reel loop
Facebook has changed. A feed that used to be mostly your friends now mixes in Reels rows, suggested videos, and a Video tab built around short clips. For people who still rely on Facebook for family updates, school groups, local buy-and-sell or event invites, that's frustrating: you can't leave, but you can't open it without getting pulled into a reel.
Reelless lets you keep Facebook as a tool for staying in touch, and stops the short-video part from taking over.
What Facebook allows today
At the time of writing, Facebook offers a few partial controls:
- Hide reel / Show less on individual reels. This tunes recommendations rather than removing Reels.
- The Feeds tab with filters like Friends or Groups. It's genuinely useful, but it's a separate view — the default home feed still contains Reels.
- Snooze a person, Page or group for 30 days. Helpful for specific sources, not for Reels as a format.
- Time reminders under Your time on Facebook, which nudge rather than stop.
None of these turn Reels off. We cover each in more depth in How to turn off Reels on Facebook.
What Reelless blocks on Facebook
- The Reels player closes automatically, wherever it opened from.
- Reels rows in News Feed are covered with a calm panel so you can scroll past them.
- The Video / Reels tab won't open.
- Suggested posts and reels are hidden with Friends-first mode, if you turn it on. See Facebook without suggested posts for how that works.
Everything else keeps working: friends' posts, groups, events, Marketplace, Pages you follow, notifications, and links that open Messenger.
Facebook Lite works too
Facebook Lite is popular on budget phones and slow connections — and it has Reels as well. Reelless supports Facebook Lite alongside the main app, with the same controls. If you use both, protect both.
How to set it up
- Install Reelless and choose Facebook (and Facebook Lite, if you use it).
- Keep Reels player, Reels rows and Reels tab blocked. Turn on Friends-first if suggested posts bother you too.
- Enable Reelless in Android's Accessibility settings when asked. Reelless explains exactly what the permission is for before you do; you can read the same explanation on How it works.
- Open Facebook and scroll your feed. Reels rows should appear covered, and tapping a reel should drop you straight back.
Gentle limits, not just blocks
If you're not ready to cut Reels completely, set a daily short-form allowance — five or ten minutes a day — and Reelless will close the player once it's used up. You can also set a pause before open: a few seconds of breathing before Facebook launches, so opening it is a choice rather than a reflex.
What Reelless doesn't do
Reelless doesn't log in to your account, read your messages, post anything, or change your Facebook settings. It also doesn't block ads — it isn't an ad blocker. Recognition happens on your phone, and no screen content is collected or sent. Full details are in our Accessibility Service disclosure.
