Block Instagram Reels — keep your messages, Stories and friends

Instagram is where a lot of friendships live now: DMs, Stories, group chats, photos. Reels is where the time goes. You can separate the two.

The app you need, wrapped around the feed you don't

Most people don't open Instagram to watch Reels. They open it to reply to a message, check a friend's Story, or post a photo. But the Reels tab sits in the middle of the bottom bar, Reels appear in the feed, and a reel shared in a DM opens into a full-screen player where the next one is a swipe away.

You can't really leave Instagram if your friends are there. You can make Reels stop pulling you in.

What Instagram itself lets you do

Instagram's controls move around, so treat this as a snapshot at the time of writing:

  • "Not interested" on a reel tunes what you see next, but doesn't reduce how much you see.
  • Snoozing suggested posts in your feed hides suggestions for a while; it doesn't touch the Reels tab or the player.
  • Daily time reminders in Your activity nudge you after a set time each day. They're easy to dismiss.
  • Sensitive content controls change what kind of reels you're shown, not whether you're shown them.

There's no switch that turns Reels off. If there were, this page wouldn't need to exist.

What Reelless blocks on Instagram

  • The Reels player. Whether it opens from the Reels tab, a post in your feed, or a link, Reelless closes it as soon as it appears.
  • The Reels tab. Tapping it does nothing.
  • The Explore grid. Explore is mostly reels these days, so it's covered by default. You can turn this off if you use Explore for search.
  • Suggested reels in your feed. Rows of suggested reels are covered with a calm panel.

What keeps working: direct messages, Stories, your home feed, posting photos and Stories, comments, your profile, search.

One and done

The hardest case is the reel a friend sends you. You want to see it — it's part of the conversation — but the moment you finish, the next reel starts. With One and done, Reelless lets that single reel play. Swipe for the next, and the player closes, dropping you back into the chat.

How to set it up

  1. Install Reelless and select Instagram as a protected app.
  2. Leave Reels player, Reels tab and Explore on (the defaults), or adjust them.
  3. Turn on Reelless in Accessibility settings when prompted. Reelless shows you a plain-language explanation first; the same text is on our How it works page.
  4. Open Instagram, tap the Reels tab, and notice that nothing happens. That's the point.

If you want a softer approach, set a daily short-form allowance instead — for example 10 minutes of Reels a day — and let Reelless enforce it.

Your account stays yours

Reelless never asks for your Instagram password, never logs in, and never touches your account. It doesn't read your messages. Recognition happens entirely on your phone and nothing about your screen leaves it. Our Accessibility Service disclosure explains this in detail.

More ways to take back your time

Blocking Reels works best alongside a couple of small habit changes: moving Instagram off your home screen, turning off non-essential notifications, and deciding in advance when you'll check messages. Our guide Instagram without Reels: every option compared walks through all of them, with the honest pros and cons of each.

Reelless is not affiliated with Meta or Instagram. "Instagram" and "Reels" are trademarks of their owner and are used only to describe what the app works with.

Questions

Can I remove the Reels tab from Instagram?

Instagram doesn’t offer a setting to remove the Reels tab. Reelless makes the tab do nothing when tapped, and closes the Reels player whenever it opens.

Will I still see Stories and DMs?

Yes. Stories, direct messages, your feed, your profile and posting all keep working. Reelless only reacts to Reels screens and the Explore grid.

Can I still watch a reel someone sends me in a DM?

Yes. “One and done” lets you watch the reel you were sent. Swipe for the next one and the player closes.

Does Reelless log into my Instagram account?

No. Reelless never asks for your password and never accesses your account. It only recognizes Reels screens on your phone and presses back or covers them.

Is Explore blocked too?

You choose. Explore is largely a grid of reels, so it’s blocked by default, but you can switch it back on in the Instagram settings inside Reelless.

What about Instagram on my computer?

The Reelless Chrome extension, currently in development, brings the same blocking to Instagram in Chrome on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
